Mono Basketweavers

Mono basketry

The Mono Basketweavers are comprised of master basketweavers who have a history of teaching in their communities, across California, and even nationally.  Their goal is to promote the survival of the traditional arts and language of the Mono, the indigenous people of Madera, Mariposa, and Mono Counties.

In 2010, the Mono Basketweavers received a grant from ACTA’s Living Cultures Grants Program for the Nugwa Akapotno Tugwishiwai (meainging “we will weave acorn baskets from redbud”) project.  During the project, the master basketweavers strengthened their knowledge of diverse weaving techniques and the language around gathering weaving materials and the weaving process.  The Mono Basketweavers also created audio and video documentation and teaching media for use beyond the project’s end.
