Jacob Hernandez
Mutiple genres of traditional Mexican music rely on the sounds of stringed instruments, from mariachi’s guitarróns, vihuelas, and guitars, to son jarocho’s jaranas. The quality of music produced is a direct result of the quality of craftsmanship that went into the creation of the instrument, including the mastering of necessary tools, an understanding of the physics of sound, an impeccable attention to detail, a keen ear, and the ability to work flawlessly with one’s hands.
Jacob Hernandez learned the craft and art of stringmaking from Francisco Gonzalez, the original owner and founder of Guadalupe Custom Strings in Los Angeles. Jacob worked with Francisco as an apprentice before becoming the manager and eventual owner of the business. In addition to making strings for customers all over the world through Guadalupe Custom Strings, Jacob is an accomplished son jarocho musican and one of a few marimbol players in California.
As a master artist in ACTA’s Apprenticeship Program in 2014, Jacob worked with apprentice Vaneza Mari Calderon in the art of string construction for Mexican folk instruments.
