Sangati Community Center for South Asian Music

Indian classical music

The Sangati Community Center for South Asian Music is a venue and community center focused on Indian classical music in San Francisco.  Occupying a small storefront in San Francisco’s Mission District, the Sangati Center has become known for its innovative approach to serving a traditional art form through presenting frequent public performances.  As a public art-house, based on a sliding-scale admission (no-one turned away for lack of funds), over 150 concerts have been presented since its founding in 2006.

In 2013, 2010, and 2009, the Sangati Center recevied grants from ACTA’s Living Culture Grants Program to support a series of public concerts of Indian classical music.  These acoustic sessions feature artists at all levels of ability, from world-class musicians to advanced students who represent both North and South Indian traditions.  Performing before 30-60 people at a time creates an intimate setting to experience the music.
