Oakland Word and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center present a 5-week class focusing on sharing food and telling stories.  The class will be taught by Thy Tran and Claire Light.

Sharing food and telling stories are two of the most powerful ways we create, communicate, and connect.  In this 5-week class, students will explore the creative process in both cooking and writing. While learning fundamental concepts and skills, students will also gain insight into the psychological, emotional, social and cultural forces that shape what we eat and the stories we tell.

The OACC's kitchen will be the laboratory where students engage with foods both new and familiar. We'll prepare traditional dishes from scratch, experiment with flavors, and, most importantly, learn from each other the diverse roles food played in their families. In addition to preparing meaningful, healthful meals, we will examine our assumptions about the foods we cook and eat.

Each cooking lesson will be paired with a writing theme. As we cook, we'll be thinking about how we use our senses, interact with society, and find beauty and meaning in our lives. We will read stories and learn writing techniques. And then we'll write stories about our own lives, inspired by cooking, eating, and the importance of food in every aspect of our culture.
