Gypsy artists Jose Galvez, Kina Mendez and Antonio de Jerez join dancer Lakshmi "La Chimi" Wendesday, April 7th, 7:30p, Kuumbwa, SANTA CRUZFriday, April 9th, 8pm, Julia Morgan, BERKELEY Lakshmi "La Chimi" Basile is considered by many to be the purest Gypsy-style flamenco dancer in the United States, with a growing worldwide reputation. She lives in Seville, Spain where she performs regularly at flamenco Penas and tablaos. She studied with Los Farruco, Angelita Vargas, Juana Amaya, Yolanda Heredia and Concha Vargas. Singer Kina Mendez grew up in the Mendez clan of Gypsy artists from Jerez. She began singing under the influence of her aunt, legendary singer La Paquera de Jerez. Her professional career began when she joined Manuel Morao's company. She later worked with Mario Maya and toured internationally with Salvador Tavora's productions Carmen and Carmina Burana. Performing in festivals such as La Fiesta de las Bulerias and Las Fiestas de la Vendimia in Jerez de la Frontera, she has shared the stage with Agujetas, El Grilo, La Macanita and others. A featured artist at this year's Festival de Jerez, her solo CD De Sevilla a Jerez was released last year in Madrid. Jose Galvez is the nephew of the legendary guitarist Juan Parilla de Jerez. Jose is heir to the pure Gypsy tradition of the flamenqusimo neighborhood of Santiago, in Jerez de la Frontera where he was born. Jose has performed since he was a young child as both guitarist and singer. He has collaborated with Gerardo Nunez, Carmen Cortez, Manolete, Alejandro Granados, and Domingo Ortega to name a few. In 1997 he was featured on the compilation Jerez Joven por Bulerias (out of print) produced by the legendary guitarist Moraito, where he sang his signature "El amor tiene colores". In 1999 he recorded his first solo album Bohemio de Amor. He has performed with artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Joaquin Cortez and Antonio Canales. Jose's latest recording, Galvez & the National Orchestra of Nowheristanm was recorded with the multi cultural National Orchestra of Nowheristan. Jose lives in Jerez de la Frontera and currently plays traditional and fusion flamenco at numerous festivals and concerts around Spain. Antonio de Jerez was born in Jerez de la Frontera, and grew up in a singing and dancing flamenco as part of his cultural legacy. One of the most highly regarded flamenco singers currently living in the US, he has worked with many dance companies including those of Jose Molina, Rosa Montoya, Luisa Triana, Yaelisa, Domingo Ortega and others.
