San Jose Taiko presents its annual Rhythm Spirit concert series in three performances, on September 10th and 11th at the Campbell Heritage Theatre.

This year’s performance includes new works and arrangements as well as the same electrifying energy for which San Jose Taiko is internationally known.

San Jose Taiko was formed in 1973 in San Jose’s Japantown, and has grown into a dynamic, world-class taiko ensemble that performs more than 170 times each year locally, nationally, and internationally.  This year's production celebrates the origins of the unique style for which San Jose Taiko is renown.

Taiko, the Japanese drum, is an instrument that embodies the spiritual essence and heartbeat of Japanese culture. Weaving traditional Japanese sounds with other world rhythms such as African, Latin, Filipino, American rock and jazz, San Jose Taiko presents an innovative and contemporary sound that bridges diverse styles and resonates with the Asian soul in America.

“The concept of kumi-daiko, or ensemble taiko drumming, is what San Jose Taiko is known for around the world,” said Wisa Uemura, co-composer and arranger for RS10 works this year.  “The philosophy of ‘group before individual’ is something that [founders] Roy and PJ Hirabayashi have promoted on-stage as a performing company and off-stage as an arts organization from the beginning and is an integral part of each new member’s training.”

Among the debut performances is "Bayou", a composition written by performing member Dylan Solomon.

There are three performances of Rhythm Spirit 2010: Friday, September 10 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. All shows are at the Campbell Heritage Theatre, 1 West Campbell Avenue at Hamilton Avenue in Campbell, CA.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students & seniors. All seats are reserved, and group rates are available. Ticket information is available by visiting heritagetheatre.org or by calling 408-866-2700.  For more information visit www.taiko.org.

About San Jose Taiko:

San Jose Taiko, with a deep respect of cultural traditions and a commitment to artistic excellence, is dedicated to the advancement of the taiko art form through the development of its world-class Performing Ensemble and the San Jose Taiko Conservatory. Located in the heart of Japantown of San Jose, the company performs throughout the Bay Area, the United States and abroad.

Since 1973 San Jose Taiko (SJT) has integrated this historical Japanese art form with other world rhythms.  Founded by Roy and PJ Hirabayashi, SJT is predicated upon a profound respect for each member of the group.

All compositions performed by SJT are written or arranged by members of the group. Composing, choreographing, designing and producing costumes, and handcrafting of the drums are part of the holistic process in which all members participate. Through this singleness of mind and spirit, harmony is achieved and the music rings with unity and clarity.
