20th Annual Jewish Music Festival
Yair Dalal, Artistic Mentor in Judeo-Arabic Music
The 20th Annual Jewish Music Festival, Berkeley, received $9,500 for an artistic mentorship with Yair Dalal, an Israeli musician of Iraqi-Jewish background, which will include a month-long residency in the Bay Area. Mr. Dalal will introduce students to Judeo-Arabic music through lectures, demonstrations, master classes, workshops, and performances. Mr. Dalal will work with community arts centers, schools, universities, and Middle East music and cultural networks. He will also form a choral group and ensembles that may perform at the 20th Annual Jewish Music Festival in March 2005.
Yair Dalal is a composer, violinist, oud (Middle Eastern plucked lute) player, and peace activist. He began studying Judeo-Arabic music when he was six years-old from immigrants who had moved from Iraq to Israel in the 1950s. Today he continues to keep this distinct musical tradition alive through teaching, public performances, and recordings. He recently founded Almaya – The School for Traditional Judeo-Arabic Music in Jaffa, Israel. This artist residency will give him the opportunity to introduce Iraqi-Jewish music to American students and audiences.
