Most are familiar with the Great Highland Bagpipe, the celebrated instrument of Scottish music. Bagpipe music connects people to their Scottish cultural heritage and it is played regularly at community events such as weddings, and funerals. Ian Whitelaw began playing the bagpipes when he was nine years old. He had the opportunity to study with Bob Nicol, the former piper to King George V, and Andrew Wright, president of the Highland Society of Piobaireachd (the classical music of the bagpipes, pronounced “pee-brock”). Whitelaw has won top awards for bagpiping throughout the United States and Canada. He currently teaches, performs for the community, and has brought Highland bagpipe music to the entertainment industry, serving as a creative consultant and performer on successful films and television shows. His apprentice David Mock has been playing the bagpipes for eight years. He performs regularly for his church and recently began to enter solo competitions. He hopes to improve his skills so that he can continue to advance in competitions and perform for the community at weddings and funerals.
