Having participated in ACTA’s Apprenticeship Program in its first round in 1999, Asha Ramesh is returning to the program as a master vocalist in South Indian Carnatic music with a new apprentice, Karthik Chandran. Beginning her study of Carnatic vocals at the age of 3 in Jamshedpur, India, Asha Ramesh has devoted her life to this art form. She regularly performs in musical and dance presentations throughout California. In November 2002 she celebrated ten years of teaching and performing in the Bay Area with a public program that included all of her students as well as some of the best musicians and dancers in the Bay Area. Karthik Chandran has already been studying with Asha for over eight years and he will be working on increasing his repertoire of kirtanas, or advanced musical pieces, and his improvisational skills.
