Khmer Arts Academy—Long BeachFunding from the Traditional Arts Development program will support the mentorship of Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, master Cambodian classical dancer to master classical musician of pin peat music, Ho Chimm Chan. One of the best ways the Khmer Arts Academy can disseminate knowledge and build informed audiences is through lecture/demonstrations that are conducted as part of local and regional outreach programs for school children. Academy Artistic Director Sophiline Cheam Shapiro has more than a decade of experience conducting successful lecture/demonstrations. Ms. Shapiro will teach Mr. Chan to conduct similar workshops and demonstrations through a series of 15 trainings. This project will give Chan the skills he needs to share his tremendous knowledge and talent with students of all ages. The Khmer Arts Academy is a public benefit organization dedicated to fostering the vitality of Cambodian arts and culture and to expanding the role arts and culture play in the development and well being of young people and of society as a whole. The academy uses numerous activities to create a continuum of recruitment, training, outreach, creation and performance that develops accomplished artists and diverse, informed audiences. Such activities include: public performances, sponsorships of special events, grant writing, publicity and other services for community-based artists, and research and documentation.
