Louise Robertson and Carolyn Stanford, Volunteer Appreciation Day
Louise Robertson and Carolyn Stanford, Volunteer Appreciation Day, June 2001

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is interested in developing a Tech-Style Arts Apprenticeship Program to help Santa Clara County refugees adapt their traditional needle and fiber art skills to a contemporary Bay Area market and ease their transition into life in the Silicon Valley by introducing them to computerized sewing machines, quilting machines, and looms. The first step in accomplishing this requires a needs assessment and documentation of traditional skills among members of the refugee communities that will be served. Funds will be used to hire Musa Kamara, Director of the African Refugee Community Services, to serve as a consultant in assessing the local African refugee community. The project aims to learn whether or not members of the African refugee community want to professionalize and adapt traditional craft skills for a contemporary market.
