The California Arts Council (CAC) and the Fund for Folk Culture have entered into a contractual agreement by which the Fund for Folk Culture administers the recruitment and dissemination of applications, and reviews and recommends the grants of the California Arts Council's Traditional Folk Arts Program. All recommendations are subject to approval by the California Arts Council.

Project Title: Choreography and Artistic Director of Sakuntalam
Project Description: Support for Indian dance master Anjani Ambegaokar to choreograph Sakuntalam, a full length dance drama in classical Kathak style for the Sundar Kala Kendra Foundation, and teach advanced students of her dance company and school. The work will culminate in a performance of the dance drama, scheduled for December, 2001, in the Los Angeles/Orange Country area. Funds will also support the commissioning of music for the performance.

Project Title: 2001 Tenth Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture
Project Description: Support for the traditional arts component of the 2001 Tenth Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture. Traditions presented include: hud hud (epic chant), higante (pageantry & ritual), rondalla (music and dance), and kulintang gongs. The festival is scheduled for September 8-9, 2001 at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, California.

Project Title: Three Episodes of The Languages of Sound and Movement Television Series
Project Description: Support to produce three episodes of The Languages of Sound and Movement, a television show focusing on the traditional dance and music of diverse Bay Area cultural groups. The program will be broadcast on Contra Costa Cable.

Project Title: African-American Improvisational Star Quilts
Project Description: Support for full-color promotional materials to accompany an exhibit of African-American Improvisational Star Quilts created by women in Oakland's postwar African-American community. The exhibit features quilts from the collection of qulting expert Eli Leon, and examines the aesthetic relationships among and between several generations of female kin. Funds will also support the development of a curriculum guide for local 3rd and 4th grade students.

Project Title: Presenting the Evolution of Mexican Folk Dance in the Mayan Region
Project Description: Support for the production of a folklorico dance program demonstrating the evolution of Mexican folk dance in the Mayan region. The program will focus on Yucatan and Spanish jota folk dance, the Cuban danzon, and pre-Columbian Mayan dances.
Ofelia Esparza, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County
Project Title: Installation of Three Large-Scale Ofrendas
Project Description: Support for master altarista (altar maker)Ofelia Esparza to construct and install three ofrendas (altars) for the Day of the Dead celebrations in and near Los Angeles. Preparation for the altars will begin in July and and they will remain on display until after Day of the Dead. Exhibit sites include Plaza de la Raza, Self-Help Graphics, and El Pueblo Gallery on Olvera Street. Ms. Esparza will also present a slide presentation and lecture at Self Help Graphics and discuss her work as an altarista.

Project Title: Preservation and Practice of Traditional Okinawan Art Forms in Northern California
Project Description: Support for a June 2002 event that includes: a concert-length performance of Okinawan music & dance, a series of master classes taught by three recognized master artists, a visual arts exhibition and an interpretive panel discussion, all to be held at San Jose's Mexican Heritage Plaza.

Project Title: Korean P'ungmul and Talchum Festival
Project Description: Support for the implementation of an all day outdoor Korean p'ungmul (traditional drumming, dance & folk singing) and talchum festival to celebrate Chusok (Korean Thanksgiving) on September 22, 2001. The event will be held in Oakland.

Project Title: Precious Cargo: Childbirth and Cradle Baskets in California Indian Culture
Project Description: Support for the design and publication of a catalogue to accompany the upcoming exhibit Precious Cargo: Childbirth and Cradle Baskets in California Indian Culture. The exhibit features ontemporary and historic cradle baskets from many California Indian tribes and examines their aesthetic and social functions in California Indian culture. Project Title: Primer Encuentro de Etnomusicologos
Project Description: Support for Primer Encuentro de Etnomusicologos, a public symposia on the evolution of the mariachi tradition, to be held as part of the Mexican Heritage Corporation's annual mariachi festival, the largest in California. The panel will include nationally recognized mariachi ethnomusicologists from Mexico and the U.S. and enhance the festival's educational component for mariachi enthusiasts.

Project Title: Gospel Roots of Jazz
Project Description: Support for Gospel Roots of Jazz, a musical collaboration between the Choir and several prominent Bay Area jazz musicians that begins with the slave era acapella spirituals and the early period of gospel music, leading to contemporary choir and ensemble jazz-influenced gospel, and gospel-influenced jazz, which will also be performed.

Project Title: Mission Matinees
Project Description: Support for two traditional arts performances as part of Mission Matinees, a program series that will take place on Sunday afternoons as part of ODC's family programming. Performances will include a program of American Indian dance featuring Native Nations & The Good Red Road, and a ballet folklorico performance, Tardeadas, featuring Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco.

Project Title: African Music and Dance Festival BUWA 2001
Project Description: Support for Oriki Theater's African Music and Dance Festival, BUWA 2001. Funds will underwrite theater rental, artisitic and technical salaries, and the purchase of props. BUWA is scheduled for October 17-20, 2001 at the Cubberley Theater in Palo Alto.

Project Title: Thirteenth Annual Pacific Islander Festival
Project Description: Support to produce and present the Thirteenth Annual Pacific Islander Festival which celebrates the cultural heritage, arts, and traditions of the indigenous Pacific Island communities from Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, New Zealand, Cooks, Guam, Marshalls and Fiji. The festival will be held on May 4-5, 2002 at the Ken Mallow Harbor Regional Park in Wilmington-Harbor City.

Project Description: Support for the Tenth Annual Thai Cultural Day, a one-day festival celebrating the cultural traditions of the Thai community. Traditions presented include Thai classical dance and music, storytelling, fruits and vegetable carving, and food demonstrations.

Project Description: Support for Dehcontee's 2001 Summer Dance Program that will run from July 2 - August 29, 2001 in Oakland. The program emphasizes the music, dance, drumming and theatrical performance traditions of Liberia and concludes with a public performance for the community. Classes are held two days per week and serve 200 children, ages 5-8

Project Title: Master Artist Mentor/Apprentice Program
Project Description: Support for the Master Artist Mentor/Apprentice Afterschool Program involving artists in EBCA West African Music and Dance Training and Performance Program. Master artists are resident faculty in drumming and dance. The program targets youth, ages 15-25.

Project Title: Folk & Traditional Artists-in-Residence Program
Project Description: Support for a folk & traditional artists-in-residence program in partnership with Fresno Unified School District's Southeast Intercession School that targets students needing academic improvement. The featured traditional artists will work in four-week sessions and includes a Lao weaver, Cowboy bootmaker, Mono basketweaver, Irish dancer, Hmong musician and instrument maker, Mexican ranchera singer, and a California saddlemaker.

Project Title: Construct 13 Standards to Lead the San Francisco Day of the Dead Ritual Procession
Project Description: Support to construct the 13 Standards that lead the annual San Francisco Day of the Dead Ritual Procession. The project will include workshops on traditional paper cutting and crafting techniques. The workshops will be held in the Mission District with master artist, Juan Pablo Gutierrez.

Project Title: Women in E'Motion: Master Class
Project Description: Support for master classes conducted by Ramya Harishankar for five advanced students over a period of twelve months involving research, analysis, discussion and practice of abhinaya (traditional dance form) through the study of five padams (traditional love songs). Ramya Harishankar is a master artist of Bharata Natyam (traditional Indian dance focusing upon the Ramayana).

Project Title: Workshops to Teach Traditional Native Songs
Project Description: Support for Julian Lang, recognized Karuk language expert and singer, to teach song workshops at a local middle school, high school and cultural center in the Eureka-Arcata area. The participants will be a cross-section of the local Indian community, including those of multi-tribal or mixed background.

Project Title: Workshops on Traditional Arts and Crafts of the Region
Project Description: Support for the Native people of the Eastern Sierra, the Northern Paiute and Shoshone, to: 1) conduct workshops aimed at family tribal members providing instruction from tribal elders and tradition bearers in traditional arts and crafts of the region, and 2) a youth program providing instruction in the same arts and crafts.

Project Title: Continuation of the Basketweaving Component of the Naa Vura Yee Shiip Program
Project Description: Support for the continuation of a basketweaving component in the Naa Vura Yee Shiip Program, which offers training in traditional arts and customs in two Karuk Tribal communities along the Klamath River. Program staff and volunteers will assist two master artists to teach traditional Karuk basketweaving, harvesting and preparation of materials, and both open and fine weaving techniques.

Project Title: Master Apprentice Music and Dance Workshops with Julian Gonzalez
Project Description: Support for Julian Gonzalez, a master mariachi musician, to conduct advanced music and dance workshops in traditional rural mariachi styles with teachers from Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center. Funds will also support the music transcription of rare rural sones (songs) and lyric sheets for use in the workshops.

Project Title: Himalayan Arts & Cultural Council: Workshop with Prajwal Vajracharya
Project Description: Support for a two-day performance and a six-day workshop at the Museum by a world renowned Newari Tantric Dancer from Nepal, Mr. Prajwal Vajracharya. Mr. Vajrachrya is the foremost living master of an ancient traditional Buddhist dance.

Project Title: Apprenticeship Program with Master Weaver Carmen de Jesus
Project Description: Support to organize an apprenticeship program with master weaver, Carmen de Jesus. Funds will support the purchase of a back-strap loom and yarn, and fees for Ms. de Jesus to take on five apprentices. Carmen de Jesus is a traditional Trique weaver from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, and is known as a maker of huipils-tunic-like garments-that exhibit a weaving technique and visual iconography particular to her cultural group.

Project Description: Support for Istvan Szabo, a master teacher and choreographer of traditional Hungarian dance, to create and teach three dance suites-Moldvai, Lakocsai, and Kemenytelke-to the Karpatok Hungarian Ensemble.

Project Title: Twelve Workshops and Performance of Dance: the Spirit of Cambodia
Project Description: Support for twelve dance workshops and one performance of traditional Cambodian dance and music for Long Beach-area students. The workshops and performance are scheduled in conjunction with a rare performance in Long Beach by the dance company of the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. The workshops will be conducted by Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, a former member of the Royal University dance troupe who is now a resident of Los Angeles. The school performance will feature the Royal University dance troupe.

Project Description: Support for a photographic archivist to review, reorganize, and facilitate public accessibility of unprocessed archival photographic collections pertaining to California folk art environments. Project Title: Part-time Folk and Traditional Arts Consulting Position
Project Description: Support for a part-time folk and traditional arts position to develop and implement a Folk Arts Fellowship Program at the Council. The program is based on two years of field survey work and planning and will target newcomer and ethnic populations in the area. As a part of the program, there will be an exhibition of the fellows' artwork at the ACSV offices.

Project Title: 2002 California Indian Basketweavers Gathering
Project Description: Support for an annual gathering of traditional California Indian basketweavers from throughout the state for three days of sharing basketry-related arts. The gathering will include demonstrations, panels of experts, sales of basketry and speakers. The event is scheduled to take place on June 21-23, 2002 at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park in Amador County.

Project Title: Bear Mountain Cultural Gathering
Project Description: Support for the Bear Mountain Gathering, a festival of traditional folk arts, singing, dancing, weaving and handgames of the Kamotikado Northern Paiutes. The gathering will take place on July 20-22, 2001 at the Modoc County Fairgrounds in Cedarville, the traditional home of the Kamotikado Northern Paiute band.

Project Title: Philippine Dance Gathering and Workshops
Project Description: Support for the Philippine Dance Gathering and Workshops, to be held at UCLA in August, 2001. The event is the first such nationwide gathering to be held in the United States and will provide a forum for Filipino dance groups and other interested parties to perform, share knowledge and discuss issues of common concern.
