San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild

The San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild (SJMAG)'s mission is to unite and serve communities by conducting cross-cultural arts programming reflective of the experiences of African-Americans, women and Chicano/Latinos. Incorporated in 1990, SJMAG is a resident arts organization at the Mexican Heritage Plaza.  SJMAG produces an annual presenting series, community performances and workshops, and multicultural arts education programs.

In 2010, with support from ACTA's Traditional Arts Development Program, SJMAG worked with development consultant Toni Press-Coffman to update the organization's three-year strategic plan.

With support from ACTA's Traditional Arts Development Program in 2007 and 2009, Viera Whye, artistic director of SJMAG, attended the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

In 2006, SJMAG received a grant from ACTA's Living Cultures Grants Program to conduct a Congolese African Dance and Music Workshop series in Spring 2006.  Taught by master drummer, Constant Massengo, and master dance instructor, Regine Ndounda, this ten-week series focused on dance, rhythms, song, and folklore from the Congo in Central Africa.
