We invite you to listen to Mariachi Las Alondras discuss and demonstrate their music (real audio).
Mariachi Las Alondras is comprised of twelve women. Each has devoted herself to the music and heritage of mariachi. Some performed in Mexico, studied music in the United States,and many of them have college degrees. One is working on her Ph.D in ethnomusicology from UCLA. Las Alondras have become instant role models for young women of all races and ages. They are not so much defying the dominance of men in mariachi as they are trying to set a new standard of expectation for the role of women.
