OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

World Music Summer Institute

June 25 – July 1, 2006

This summer UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology is launching a one-week World Music Summer Institute which will allow young musicians the opportunity to experience some of LA's finest musical cultures firsthand. Participants in this institute will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of three performance traditions: Music of African Americans, Music of Korea or Music of Mexico. This unique institute is designed to familiarize and expose high school and community college students, and interested community members to the repertoire and musical styles of one of these cultural groups. Students will learn to perform music through study with a master artist, and be introduced to the history, culture, and music theory of that tradition. As part of the Institute, students will also have an opportunity to experience music in its cultural context through off campus field trips to selected venues across the City of Los Angeles. Planned visits include a trip to a community cultural center, a local church, and a restaurant where live music is performed.

The mariachi class will be taught by Jesus Guzman of Mariachi Los Camperos. All students would be required to bring their own instrument and posses basic proficiency in their instrument. James Roberson will teach African American gospel music to students of all levels of experience and Dong Suk Kim will teach samulnori – traditional Korean percussion.
