Native Americans in Philanthropy Announces New Website

Native Americans in Philanthropy recently launched its new website. Native Americans in Philanthropy seeks to engage Native and non-Native peoples in understanding and advancing the role of philanthropy through practices that support Native traditional values for current and future generations. The site features include: Reports and Research, Job Postings, Links to Organizations, and List of Members. Other information that can be found on the website includes the organization’s History, Accomplishments, News, Events, Announcements, and a Newsletter.

Adobe Action Grants Program

Deadline: December 31, 2004
(Restricted to Silicon Valley Applicants)

The Adobe Action Grant program supported by software company Adobe supports programs and partnerships designed to help make communities "better, stronger, and more vibrant places to live, work and do business."

The Adobe Action Grant program provides one-time cash-only grants for general operating and program support through a competitive, quarterly online application process. Grant amounts range from $5,000-$20,000 and are for one year only.

One of the focus areas of the program is Commitment to Community. Under this category, the fund supports nonprofit organizations and programs that address community-specific needs, with an emphasis on promoting and providing cultural awareness and arts education programs for the broader community.

To be eligible for support, nonprofit organizations and schools must be located in one of the following areas: San Jose/Silicon Valley, (southern San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, southern Alameda County).

ARTOGRAPHY: Arts in a Changing America

Deadline: January 14, 2005

Artography is a pilot program incubated by Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) with a grant from the Ford Foundation. Artography's goal is to support exemplary art making as seen through a lens of the changing demographics of the U.S. and its expanding realm of cultural aesthetics.  The program seeks organizations that are recognized as artistic leaders and have demonstrated a commitment to diversity through the composition of their leadership, staff, and decision-making processes. Artography will award 8-12 organizations two-year general operating support grants of $25,000-$50,000 annually, with additional funds made available to grantees for targeted purposes on a competitive basis.  The preliminary application is due on January 14, 2005 and decisions to invite full proposals will be made by March 21, 2005.

Los Angeles County Arts Commission Inter|Arts Program

Deadline: January 19, 2005
(Restricted to Los Angeles County Applicants)

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission announced that sufficient funds remain for its Inter|Arts program to support a third round of grants to arts organizations for projects taking place from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2007. The Commission accepts proposals from organizations of all budget sizes, both new applicants and those that have been previously funded by the program.

Initiated in 2004 with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission, the Arts Commission’s pilot program fosters opportunities for artists based in Los Angeles County to interact with, and experience the work of, respected international artists who are presenting their work at the invitation of local arts organizations. Round 1 grantees are using awards to offset costs associated with artist-led workshops, symposia, and master classes. Grant recipients for Round 2 will be announced in mid-December.

Alliance for California Traditional Arts Development Program

Deadline: February 1, 2005

The Alliance for California Traditional Arts awards contracts up to $1,500 through its Traditional Arts Development Program to support consultancies, mentorships, and travel opportunities that foster a new level of growth for individual folk & traditional artists and organizations engaged in this field in California. Proposals may be focused on organizational and/or artistic development goals. Individual artists and cultural practitioners, as well as organizations, whether incorporated or not, may apply.

Work in traditional arts and culture requires skills and support in many areas, including cultural expertise; field documentation; artist self-management, marketing and publicity; repertoire development; concert production; interpretation and presenting; editing; graphic design; exhibit design; archival procedures; and organizational development and management, among others. The Traditional Arts Development Program invites applicants to design project proposals that will facilitate their next level of growth artistically or organizationally.

The California Arts Council, the San Francisco Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts provide funding support for this program.

Durfee Foundation Artists’ Resource for Completion Grants

Deadline: February 1, 2005
Restricted to Los Angeles County Applicants

 The Durfee Foundation’s Artists' Resource for Completion grants provide rapid, short-term assistance to individual artists in Los Angeles County who wish to enhance work for a specific, imminent opportunity that may significantly benefit their careers. Artists in any discipline are eligible to apply. The applicant must already have secured an invitation from an established arts organization to present the proposed work. The work must be scheduled for presentation within six months of the application deadline. Applications are reviewed quarterly. The 2005 deadlines will be February 1, May 3, August 2 and November 5.

The Foundation is especially interested in encouraging applications from traditional artists. Previous grants have supported such artists and projects as:

Malathi Iyengar -- for costs related to the performance of the Ramayana at a dance festival in India
Norma Navarro -- for costs related to the exhibition of the artist's carved gourds at Plaza de la Raza in Los Angeles
Prince Diabate -- to support collaborators' fees and shipping related to a concert in Montreal

Save America’s Treasures

Deadline: February 1, 2005

Save America’s Treasures grants are available for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and collections and on nationally significant historic properties. The grants are administered by the National Park Service in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process and require a dollar-for-dollar, non-Federal match, which can be cash, donated services, or use of equipment. The grant and the non-Federal match must be expended during the grant period (generally 2 to 3 years) to execute the project. Grant requests may range from $50,000 - $1M. The Save America’s Treasures Grants Selection Panel may, at its discretion, award less than the minimum grant request. In 2004, the average Federal grant award to collections was $192,000, and the average award to historic properties was $277,000. A list of projects funded in 2004 can be viewed on page six of the program guidelines, which can be downloaded from the National Park Service website. This list gives examples of the activities supported by these grants.
