Kumeyaay : Indigenous People of Southern California
Ongoing When Father Junipero Serra entered the San Diego area in 1769, he encountered a thriving population, peaceful and hospitable. After conscripting native people to build Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the Spanish called them Diegueños after the mission, but the people had their own name: Kumeyaay. Traditional Kumeyaay lifeways are presented in displays detailing food supplies, dress and adornment, games, and ceremonies. The Kumeyaay arts of pottery and basketry are highlighted, and the exhibit has been expanded with a new display of a traditional Kumeyaay house. FebruaryLunar New Year Celebration 2008: Year of the RatSaturday, February 9, 2008 – 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm To help usher in the year 4706, Year of the Rat, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center will hold its annual new year festival. Elements of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean cultures are featured in the day-long celebration. Activities include performances, hands on art activities for families, and accompanying exhibits. Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year ParadeSaturday, February 23, 2008 – 5:30 pm Started in the 1860’s by the Chinese in San Francisco as a means to educate the community about their culture, the Chinese New Year Parade has grown to be one of the largest celebrations of Asian culture outside of Asia. Parade highlights include elaborate decorated floats, costumed elementary school groups, stilt walkers, and the 201-foot-long Golden Dragon “Gum Long.” The Parade is one of the few remaining night illuminated parades in the country. The San Francisco Guzheng Music Society Youth EnsembleSaturday, March 8, 2008 –12:00 pm to 3:00 pm The San Francisco Guzheng Music Society Youth Ensemble is invited by the Harbor Bay Intercultural Committee to perform at their 10th Lunar New Year Festival. The gala events will include local Lincoln Middle School music band, USA Kung Fu Studio, Japanese dance, Chinese musical instrument orchestra, Chinese dance, martial arts, lion dance, and many more. The San Francisco Guzheng Music Society Youth Ensemble includes six guzheng musicians ages 11 to 16. Current Apprenticeship Program participant Regnia Ngo is a member of the San Francisco Guzheng Music Society Youth Ensemble. 23rd Annual Jewish Music Festival

8th Biennial Language is Life ConferenceApril 4-6, 2008 Join the Advocates of Indigenous California Language Survival for the Language is Life Conference and learn the latest in best practices for revitalizing indigenous languages through guest speakers and workshops. Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli
Photo: Mexican Heritage Plaza Thursday, April 24, 2008 The Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli is a group composed of young people who love the traditions of their people expressed through music, songs, and dances characteristic of different ethnic groups. They create their interpretations through technical formation, bibliographical study, and ritual observation. In this special performance, Quetzalli will be joined by Mexican Heritage Plaza’s own folklórico dance troupe, Los Lupeños de San José.
