CALENDARHula for KupunaEach Monday – 9:00 am to 10:00 pm The Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center is pleased to announce their hula class for seniors. The class will include basic hula movements, history, geography and more. This is a great opportunity to get active in a fun, nurturing environment and learn a bit about Hawaiian culture at the same time. This class is geared to seniors, but open to all ages 18 and over. Kawika Alfiche, Kumu Hula of Halau O Keikiali'i and Director of the Hawaiian Cultural Center, states, “It is our responsibility to care of our elders for it is them who nurture our growth. In our culture our kupuna (elders) are cherished for their wisdom and looked to for guidance. Kumeyaay : Indigenous People of Southern California
Ongoing When Father Junipero Serra entered the San Diego area in 1769, he encountered a thriving population, peaceful and hospitable. After conscripting native people to build Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the Spanish called them Diegueños after the mission, but the people had their own name: Kumeyaay. Traditional Kumeyaay lifeways are presented in displays detailing food supplies, dress and adornment, games, and ceremonies. The Kumeyaay arts of pottery and basketry are highlighted, and the exhibit has been expanded with a new display of a traditional Kumeyaay house. 17th Annual San José Mariachi and Latin Music Festival
Now in its 17th year, the San José Mariachi and Latin Music
Festival offers a month-long schedule of music, cultural, and educational
events. Throughout the years the Festival has presented a variety of
traditional, Latin alternative, pop and regional Mexican headline artists. This
year’s line-up includes Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Mariachi
Azteca, Los Lupenos de San José, Mariachi Las Pioneras, Mariachi
Ellas Son, Mariachi Internacional Guadalajara, Linda Ronstadt, Aida

Noche VeracruzanaSaturday, September 20, 2008 In cooperation with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Encuentro Jaranero de California are present Noche Veracruzana, showcasing some of the best Jarocho and Huasteco ensembles from both sides of the border. From Xalapa, Veracruz, Tlen Huicani and Trio Huasteco Tlayoltiyane join L.A.-based Tenocelomeh, Conjunto Jardin ,and Ballet Folklorico Ollin for an evening of music and dance. Guqin WorkshopsSeptember 20, 21, 27 and 28, 2008 – 12:00 pm to 4:00
pm Presented by the Asian Art Museum and the North American Guqin Association, these hands-on workshops will cover guqin playing and performance technique, notation, history, tradition, theory, handbooks, repertory and a lot more. They will also give you an opportunity to experience other aspects of Chinese culture and tradition: philosophy, religion, opera, literature, calligraphy, painting, tea, food etc. At the end of the workshops you will make some music and have an understanding of guqin music and a broad appreciation of Chinese culture. These classes are open to anybody who would like to know more about the guqin. Classes will be interactive, consisting of lectures, audio-visual sessions, demonstrations and discussions. Pre-registration is required. 5th Annual Bay Area Hawaiian Film Festival & Cultural ConferenceSeptember 26-27, 2008 The Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center, Pacific Islander Cultural Association (PICA), and World Arts West (WAW) is pleased to present the 5th Annual Bay Area Hawaiian Film Festival & Cultural Conference. Now in its fifth year, the Bay Area Hawaiian Film Festival is a rare glimpse of Hawaiian perspectives through cinema and will feature films about Hawaiian myths and legends told for the first time in the Hawaiian language; documentaries that explore Hawaiian history through the stories of its monarchy and its people; educational features of modern issues including sovereignty, land rights, and the environment; as well as highlights on cultural traditions of Hula and other native arts & crafts. A discussion and presentation on Oli (chant styles), Hula Pahu, Lei styles, Lole (hula attire), and protocol, will be featured on Sunday afternoon. For more information visit the Festival’s website.
