Kumeyaay : Indigenous People of Southern California
Ongoing When Father Junipero Serra entered the San Diego area in 1769, he encountered a thriving population, peaceful and hospitable. After conscripting native people to build Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the Spanish called them Diegueños after the mission, but the people had their own name: Kumeyaay. Traditional Kumeyaay lifeways are presented in displays detailing food supplies, dress and adornment, games, and ceremonies. The Kumeyaay arts of pottery and basketry are highlighted, and the exhibit has been expanded with a new display of a traditional Kumeyaay house. AprilLian Ensemble in ConcertSunday, April 6, 2008 Performance by the Lian Ensemble at the opening ceremonies for the 2008 Noor Film Festival. Based in Los Angeles, the Lian Ensemble is a group of performers and composers. Their compositions fuse the mystical Persian musical heritage with the contemporary sensibilities of postmodern jazz. They create a synthesis of mystical world music composed of traditional and folk melodies and traditional Persian instruments such as the tar (lute), santur (zither), and tonbak (goblet drum). ImprovisAsians 2008! – Origins of Now
Photo: Asian Improv aRts April 14-18, 2008 ImprovisAsians! 2008 at San Francisco State University College of Creative Arts will be a series of eight events featuring public dialogue, workshops, and performances exploring the intersection of traditionality and hybridity in the formation of community. Featured guests include ethnomusicologist Deborah Wong, Japanese American dancer/choreographer/taiko artist Melody Takata, Korean vocalist/instrumentalist Dohee Lee, and SF State faculty and alumni performers. Sound Come-UnityFriday, April 18, 2008 – 7:30 pm To benefit the university’s World Music and Dance Program, San Francisco State University's School of Music and Dance teams up with Asian Improv aRts for Sound Come-Unity featuring sound creations originating from cultures spanning five continents. Sound Come-Unity is the culminating event of the weeklong program entitled ImprovisAsians 2008! - Origins of Now. The artist list for this concert includes Francis Wong, Avotcja, Master Danongan Kalanduyan, Jose Cuellar, Matthew Shenoda, Kevin Washington, Wesley Ueunten, John Calloway, John-Carlos Perea, Isabel Douglass, Saed Muhssin and Wayne Wallace. They create their interpretations through technical formation, bibliographical study, and ritual observation. In this special performance, Quetzalli will be joined by Mexican Heritage Plaza’s own folklórico dance troupe, Los Lupeños de San José. Survival from the winter and the seasonal renewal of life is celebrated at Herdeljezi through the sharing of music, dance, food and community. Richard Hagopian and Grandsons in ConcertSaturday, May 3, 2008 Sponsored by the Armenian Museum and the Fresno Art Museum, Richard Hagopian and his Hagopian Ensemble are well-known world music and traditional Armenian musicians. Richard Hagopian has been a musician since childhood. He started playing the traditional Armenian instrument, the oud, at the age of twelve. Now Hagopian is sharing this rich tradition with his grandsons, who will share the stage with their grandfather. Sounds of ChinaSunday, May 4, 2008 – 3:00 pm The San Francisco Guzheng Society will present its 26th annual concert, “Sounds of China,” featuring young talents of traditional Chinese music in the Bay Area. Performing groups include the Six Golden Flowers of the San Francisco Guzheng Music Society, California Youth Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Arts and Music Center, China’s Sprit Music Ensemble, and Alice Fong Yu Alternative School. National DishesSaturday, May 10, 2008 – 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Oakland Asian Cultural Center During Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival in May 2008, a new program at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, “National Dishes,” will celebrate and preserve the culinary, social, and cultural traditions of national dishes representing Asian Pacific American communities. Workshops will feature Korean kim chi, vegetable carving from Thailand and Laos, and South Indian samosas, among others.
